This is what MAGA wants to recreate. Soldiers that didn't realize that they enabled genocide. Soldiers that are horrified by what elected officials that they voted for did in their name. We are allowing this to happen again. Because "I prefer mean tweets and $1.79 / gallon."

Much better then reading a book or watching a crafted video.Listening to a person telling a story and causing a person to visualize the situation is/was a better way of telling this tale. Felt like I was sitting in front of fireplace listening while the author read his book.

Playing "what if" is either an interesting mental gyration, or a fool's journey. I keep going back to the fact that there were 4 B-26s on Midway, borrowed from the Army Air Corpa. They were fitted with torpedoes, told how to drop them, and told to "go get 'em" The B-26s did what they could given the minimal training and defective torpedoes. After they made their runs and dropped their torpedoes, which all missed, it is reported that they all flew over the Japanese carriers as a part of the first wave of planes launched from Midway. One plane even strafed a Japanese carrier with its forward-firing machine guns. IF they had just been armed with their normal bomb loads, they could have made their normal bomb runs and at least inflicted some damage, if not catastrophic damage on at least a few of them. Just tell the pilots, as a part of the pre-flight briefing, to come in from their sterns and drop their bombs on the flight decks. But fate dictated otherwise. We ended up winning the battle, but judicious use of those 4 B-26s would have been a big help.

The WW2 pre-war contempt of the Japanese by the Americans, and the countervailing contempt of them by the Japanese was incredible. The U.S. Navy refused to believe the Japanese had the wherewithal to attack our fleet at Pearl Harbor. This was in spite of the fact that it was known they had a substantial fleet of tankers and routinely practiced refueling at sea. Further, the Japanese had a prior history of attacking their enemy's fleet at its home base on an unannounced, preemptory basis. An objective analysis of the overreaching wartime situation would have shown the Japanese' only hope for winning a conflict was to go for the American jugular and knock out their fleet right off the bat. It was known the Americans had 3 aircraft carriers in their Pacific fleet, whereas the Japanese had 10.There were 6 large fleet carriers vs our 3. We had only one carrier in the Atlantic Ocean. We grossly underestimated their ability to build high-quality airplanes, and their ability to turn out world-class air crews for them. Conversely, the Japanese believed our navy, our people were soft-minded and did not possess a fighting spirit. Never underestimate your opponent. They thought we'd roll over and play dead if they struck a strong blow at the beginning of a war. Again, never underestimate your opponent, nor overestimate your own abilities.

It blows my mind that people are all about Japanese this and that, but going back to WW2, they were MTFKR's and what they did to mainland Asia is disgusting and horrible (Nanking and Manchuria). Japanese to this day walk around like proud peacocks, the arrogance is immeasurable... Worked and lived in Japan for ten years, those people deserve everything coming to them... Karma doesn't forget...

Roosevelt had an insatiable urge to fellate Joe Stalin, and understood the only way to get there would be to get into the war on his side. Frankie surely knew that no Asian culture could tolerate losing face, and that by cutting off Japan's access to resources, they would have to attack. Then once he got us into the war, he promptly ignored the Pacific and started shoveling aid to the Commie swill. Patton was correct. We fought on the WRONG side!

The real shock for the Japanese came a couple of days after Pearl Harbor when they rolled up to Wake Island, thinking they were just going to walk right in and take over Fortunately, Wake Island had a few hundred marines and some construction workers and when the Japanese approached they got their asses handed back to them 😂 2 destroyers and a submarine were sent to the bottom and the Marines vaporized hundreds of Japan’s best soldiers which caused the Japanese to turn tail and run immediately And when the emperor found out, he put his fist through the wall because he was so embarrassed

So many have failed to understand american military doctrine. There is no reality of facing american troops on even ground. none. to find yourself in such a place makes you either the luckiest or most unlucky person in your military, because either you survived the rain of hell, or you now stand against well drilled and fresh troops with more logistics personnel than your army has people all the while you stand there and every inch of ground behind you is already on fire. To summarize american military doctrine in 1 sentence. "Why send flesh, when steel will do?" The American military came to this conclusion after the butchery of the American Civil War and the officer corps of that era realized, America could never win a war with a larger or potentially more wealthy nation by sending fresh recruits in blue to just be eaten by grapeshot. So from then on, the US invested in the strategy of bombardment and combined arms. Making 1000 men fight with the strength of 10,000. And making 10,000 fight with the strength of a million.

Back in the 70s I was in the VA hospital because my father was getting brain surgery. As I was approaching the urinal I heard two men of a similar age start talking to each other. One was speaking with a German accent. The other asked who he was with and where he'd fought etc. Turns out they'd had fought against other at least once. I thought, aw hell, this was going to escalate into something I didn't want to be around, especially while taking a piss. But they both just laughed. Turns out the German had been wounded and captured soon after. He ended up moving to the US and joined the US military. Served 20 years, mostly working as a translator.
